If a sheriff dies which deputy takes his place?
I know they appoint someone until the next election, but how do they decide who? And who decides?Answers

If the Sheriff dies while in office, the Under Sheriff takes his place. The Under Sheriff is, generally, next in line for the top spot. When the next election is held, the "Interim" Sheriff can become the elected official. If the agency does not have a Under Sheriff, then the Bureau Chief will take the reins, until the next election. -

I'd say the one with the most experience, but I know it's really going to the guy with the best connections to the local politics.
